Synopsis
Roisin Murphy turns an ordinary suburban house into a shifting fashion tableau, appearing as a succession of distinct women in different rooms. Each incarnation has its own hairstyle, costume, posture, and mood, creating the impression of one person searching through possible identities. Glamorous, playful, and faintly claustrophobic, the video treats the house as both a stage and a trap. Murphy's changing personas reflect the song's idea of a partner understanding her more deeply than she understands herself.
Factoids & Trivia
- The video was filmed in a suburban home in Snaresbrook, northeast London. Its ordinary setting was deliberately contrasted with the elaborate styling and Murphy's many transformations.
- The central concept was connected to the song's theme: Murphy plays different versions of herself because her partner supposedly knows her better than she knows herself.
- Cindy Sherman's "Untitled Film Stills" series was a major visual reference. The video borrows the idea of presenting constructed female identities without attempting to recreate Sherman's photographs directly.
- Stylist Claire Edmondson combined high-end designer clothing with vintage pieces. The wardrobe included Louis Vuitton items, Balenciaga heels, and a ruff by local designers Poltock & Walsh.
- Several looks developed spontaneously during the fittings. One costume became an "Alexis Carrington" style character after Murphy's hair, jewelry, and oversized shoulders were added.
- The production originally had a more narrative structure and very little lip-sync. It was later re-edited into a more conventional pop-video format because the first cut did not connect strongly enough with the song.
- The video premiered on March 11, 2008, during the promotional campaign for Murphy's album "Overpowered."
- Its fashion-led visual identity earned a nomination for Best Styling in a Video at the 2008 UK Music Video Awards.
