Synopsis

In a stark black-and-white journey, Mike Skinner travels alone through the countryside in a nearly empty train carriage. He gazes through the window, absorbed in memories and uncertainty, before arriving at a church. Rather than going inside, he remains outside and delivers his deeply personal thoughts as though speaking directly to his late father. The restrained imagery mirrors the song's meditation on grief, family resemblance, faith, and the search for guidance after loss.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The song is a tribute to Mike Skinner's late father and is among the most personal recordings in The Streets' catalog.
  • The video deliberately takes a quieter, more introspective approach than the comic or chaotic style associated with several earlier Streets clips.
  • Skinner's decision to stop outside the church reflects the song's central tension: he feels drawn toward spiritual answers despite saying that religion was not part of his family's life.
  • The single was released in 2006 as the second single from *The Hardest Way to Make an Easy Living* and reached No. 20 on the UK Singles Chart.
  • The piano part has been noted for its similarity to the chord progression of The Beatles' "Let It Be." The release credits Mike Skinner as the producer and list Eddie Jenkins on piano.
  • The single's B-side was a cover of the Guillemots song "Made-Up Love Song #43."
  • The song's final turn toward reassurance gives the otherwise mournful piece an ultimately hopeful quality: Skinner comes to understand that his father's mannerisms and advice survive through him.
