Synopsis
A surreal figure appears to drift down the side of a building, turning an ordinary urban setting into a strange, weightless dream. The band perform amid the visual chaos as the action moves between the falling point of view and sharply styled shots of Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong. The imagery plays against the song's restless narrator, who seems repeatedly linked with trouble while insisting he is not responsible for the fires that follow.
Factoids & Trivia
- "Lucio Starts Fires" was released as the band's debut single on October 8, 2007, through the Young and Lost Club label.
- The video's apparently elaborate floating perspective was achieved with weather balloons rather than expensive stunt rigs. The balloon solution was reported to have cost about GBP 145, compared with an estimated GBP 145,000 for the conventional approach.
- The band were originally known as Joe Lean and the Tantrums before adopting the more distinctive Jing Jang Jong name.
- The single helped establish the group as one of the heavily tipped British indie acts of the period. They were placed at number 7 in the BBC's Sound of 2008 poll.
- A self-titled debut album was prepared and sent to reviewers, but its release was withdrawn shortly before it was due to appear. The band said the record no longer represented their current sound, and it was never officially released.
- The group split in 2010. Former members Tom Dougall, Dominic O'Dair and Maxim "Panda" Barron later formed the psychedelic rock band Toy.
- Joe Lean had previously played drums with The Pipettes and was also known as actor Joe Van Moyland.
