Synopsis

The Kooks perform in a restless, fragmented visual world built from narrow London alleyways, film strips, train tracks, ladders, window frames, and other rectangular spaces. The band repeatedly appears inside moving frames of celluloid, as though struggling to escape the boundaries of the image. A copier produces successive pictures of the group while the rapid editing keeps the performance in motion. In the closing sequence, each band member knocks down a white door, completing the video's visual theme of breaking free from confinement.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video treats the frame itself as part of the subject. Film strips, letterboxing, window casings, ladders, and rails repeatedly divide the image into parallel rectangles.
  • The band is shown performing inside a strip of celluloid, with the film bars moving past them. This creates the impression that the musicians are trapped inside a reel of film.
  • A copier is used to produce images of the band during the performance. The device extends the video's interest in repetition, sequencing, and the physical process of making images.
  • The final image of the band breaking through white doors gives the video a literal ending to its recurring escape motif.
  • "Eddie's Gun" was The Kooks' debut single in the United Kingdom, released on July 11, 2005. A different recording later appeared on the band's debut album, "Inside In/Inside Out."
  • The song's title and lyrics are a deliberately comic metaphor for sexual-performance anxiety, rather than a straightforward story about a firearm or a romantic breakup.
  • The US promotional material described the video as having a distinctly British setting while also using visual techniques associated with American mainstream music-video style.
