Synopsis

Andreas Dörner moves through dark, empty corridors with a flashlight, searching for something that remains just beyond his understanding. As he explores, he encounters people who seem to appear and disappear, creating an unstable divide between what he sees and what is actually there. Two differently colored camera perspectives show these conflicting realities at the same time. The surreal story eventually finds Dörner becoming one of the figures he has been pursuing, while Caliban perform amid the shadowy, claustrophobic imagery.

Factoids & Trivia

• "The Beloved and the Hatred" appeared on Caliban's 2004 album *The Opposite from Within* and was also issued as a Roadrunner Records promotional single.

• The band received several proposed scripts before approving the video's final concept. They rejected a more conventional idea centered on running through corridors, feeling that it would be too ordinary.

• Caliban described the intended atmosphere as very dark, with stylistic references to "Haunting Hill" and the work of David Lynch.

• The video's central visual device uses two camera perspectives and different color treatments. One viewpoint shows what Dörner perceives, while the other reveals the people or events that are absent from his immediate surroundings.

• In a 2004 interview, Dörner said the transformation at the end, when he becomes one of the figures he has been following, was one of the more amusing aspects of the shoot.

• The video received exposure on rock-oriented television programming. In a later interview, Caliban mentioned that the older clip had appeared on Rockzone and had also received more frequent play on *Headbanger's Ball*.
