Synopsis
Set in an intensely colorful, otherworldly landscape, the video follows an ice cream van as it tumbles from a cliff. Liquids, insects, fragments of color, and the van's mascot appear to drift and collide in a surreal stream of images. The action unfolds in reverse, gradually revealing the moments leading up to the crash. Rather than presenting a literal narrative, the animation turns a split-second disaster into a hypnotic, fluid visual journey that mirrors the track's restless rhythms and layered textures.
Factoids & Trivia
- The animated promo was produced for Ninja Tune by Conkerco, the London animation company also associated with the visual style of Bonobo's early catalog.
- The central event is deliberately shown backward. According to the production notes, the reversed movement allows the video to move from the crash back toward its cause, while liquids, winged insects, colors, and the ice cream mascot pass through the frame.
- "Flutter" was released in 2003 as the only single from *Dial 'M' for Monkey*. The release also included a Four Tet remix of "Pick Up" and an extended version of "Something for Windy."
- Bonobo later recalled that the track was built around a sample from a 1960s big-band party record. He described the production as a relatively quick and simple process completed while he was living in Brighton.
- The video screened at the 2004 International Film Festival Rotterdam in the short films program. It was listed as a four-minute United Kingdom production presented on Betacam SP PAL.
- The song also appeared in the snowboarding game *SSX on Tour*, helping introduce Bonobo's music to an audience beyond the Ninja Tune and downtempo scenes.
