Synopsis
D12's "My Band" turns the group's complaints about Eminem's star power into a comic backstage drama. While Eminem enjoys massages, limousines, celebrity treatment, and enthusiastic fans, the other members are left waiting for buses and struggling for attention. The video piles on exaggerated celebrity behavior, including Bizarre's attempts to get fit, a boy-band makeover, celebrity spoofs, and staged appearances in Eminem's earlier videos. The joke is that D12 exists as a group, yet Eminem is treated as its only important member.
Factoids & Trivia
- Released in 2004 as the lead single from D12's second album, "D12 World."
- The opening massage scene echoes the "Dude" skit that appears immediately before "My Band" on the album.
- The video parodies several well-known pop-culture moments, including 50 Cent's "In Da Club" workout sequence, Eminem's "Superman" and "Lose Yourself" videos, boy-band videos, and the Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake Super Bowl incident.
- Bizarre's fictional appearances in "Superman" and "Lose Yourself" play off his lyric claiming that he was merely standing in the background of Eminem's videos.
- The video was nominated for Video of the Year, Best Group Video, and Best Rap Video at the 2004 MTV Video Music Awards.
- "My Band" became D12's first top-10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, reaching No. 6 in the United States.
- The video's comedy deliberately extends the song's central satire: D12 members are presented as frustrated supporting players while Eminem receives nearly all the attention.
- The official music video has since been remastered in HD for D12's YouTube channel.
