Synopsis

Good Charlotte's "Girls & Boys" video turns the band's youthful pop-punk attitude upside down by placing it among elderly characters dressed and behaving like rebellious teenagers. The band encounters them in suburban settings, where the seniors skateboard, flirt, play games, cause minor trouble, and embrace punk fashion. Intercut performance scenes show Good Charlotte playing for the unlikely crowd. The comic contrast between the older cast and the song's teenage stereotypes gives the video its central joke and makes the band's gender commentary deliberately exaggerated.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was filmed in Ellerslie, a suburb of Auckland, New Zealand, during a two-day break in Good Charlotte's schedule.
  • Its main cast consists predominantly of elderly performers styled as stereotypical hardcore and pop-punk fans, complete with brightly colored hair, piercings, chains, dark clothing, and skateboards.
  • The video uses separate comic vignettes to highlight the personalities of the band members. Billy Martin plays video games, Benji Madden gives a woman a massage, Paul Thomas is fed pretzels by two women, and Joel Madden performs a hip-hop dance.
  • An older couple appears in the opening suburban sequence, while the band later performs on a club stage surrounded by the senior punk crowd.
  • The original version reportedly included extra scenes omitted from the official YouTube edit, including an ending in which Benji wakes up beside an older woman wearing one of his shirts and offering him cereal.
  • Another omitted sequence involved a senior woman asking the band what they wanted to do before suggesting they "trash the mall," a comic reference to Avril Lavigne's "Complicated" video.
  • "Girls & Boys" was the third single from The Young and the Hopeless, Good Charlotte's 2002 album, and the video was released in 2003.
  • The song's music video is included in the band's wider early-2000s visual identity, which combined pop-punk styling, exaggerated characters, comedy, and narrative scenes with conventional band performance footage.
