Synopsis

In a battered London street, the ground begins to shake as a UFO hovers overhead and beams Billie down to Earth. She launches into a high-energy performance, drawing crowds of young supporters into the streets. Along the way, everyday objects turn fantastical: a trash bin becomes a dancing humanoid, while graffiti on a billboard springs to life as an animated character. Billie and her friends eventually gather inside a warehouse, where the street revolution turns into an exuberant dance party.

Factoids & Trivia

• Released on June 29, 1998, "Because We Want To" was Billie's debut single and the opening track on her album "Honey to the B."

• Billie Piper was 15 when the single reached No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart, making her the youngest artist to debut at the top of the chart at that time.

• The song was selected as the official theme of the 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup.

• The clip was produced for Virgin Records by Maximillian Jacobson-Gonzalez.

• The video combines live-action performance with comic-book-style animation and transformation effects, giving the teen-pop track a deliberately exaggerated science-fiction setting.

• The surreal imagery later attracted attention from "Doctor Who" fans because Piper would go on to play Rose Tyler, although the video predates her television debut in the series by several years.
