Synopsis

The video transforms The White Stripes' rapid garage-rock performance into a constantly shifting LEGO world. Red, white, and black brick figures representing Jack and Meg White play instruments, move through rooms, climb stairs, and plunge into abstract scenes as the song races forward. A child appears at the beginning, assembling the first pieces before the miniature performers come to life. The deliberately jerky stop-motion style mirrors the track's explosive rhythm, turning a simple love song into a playful, surreal visual rush.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The physical animation was created frame by frame with LEGO bricks. The bricks were repeatedly rebuilt between shots to create the illusion of continuous movement.
  • The video's strict red, white, and black palette reflects the visual identity The White Stripes used throughout the White Blood Cells era.
  • A child seen building LEGO at the beginning is the filmmaker's son.
  • The White Stripes reportedly approached the LEGO Group about packaging a small custom set with the single. The idea was rejected because LEGO was marketed primarily toward children.
  • The clip helped push "Fell in Love with a Girl" and White Blood Cells into the mainstream, receiving heavy exposure on music television in 2002.
  • At the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards, the video won Breakthrough Video, Best Special Effects, and Best Editing.
  • The video's handmade construction became one of the best-known examples of brickfilm-style animation in a mainstream music video.
