Synopsis
In a surreal Los Angeles setting, Fran Healy appears as a human-sized Humpty Dumpty, wandering through everyday surroundings while strangers react to his strange egg-shaped presence. The Travis performance is intercut with the character's uneasy attempts to connect with the modern world, including an awkward encounter that turns into a date. The darkly comic story builds toward the nursery rhyme's inevitable conclusion: Humpty Dumpty is pushed from a wall, and the egg finally breaks.
Factoids & Trivia
- The concept reimagines Humpty Dumpty as a figure trying to exist in the modern world, rather than treating the nursery-rhyme character as simple children's imagery.
- Fran Healy wore the egg costume himself. He later recalled that the video was filmed in Los Angeles and described its tone as dark, with an ending that does not go well for his character.
- Healy wrote "The Humpty Dumpty Love Song" shortly after filming the video. He later realized that the song had been inspired by the close friend who helped create the video.
- The production used a purpose-built egg-man suit, broken-egg effects, and an interior set representing the inside of the giant egg.
- "Coming Around" was originally recorded during a b-side session in roughly half an hour. It was then promoted as a single after the band and label recognized its pop potential.
- The single was released on June 5, 2000, and became Travis' first song to debut at number one on the Scottish Singles Chart. It reached number five in the United Kingdom.
