Synopsis

The Amps perform "Pacer" at Willow Springs Raceway, where the open track becomes both a concert stage and a makeshift racing circuit. Kim Deal and her bandmates are shown playing the song alongside footage of them competing in a race, giving the video a loose, playful garage-rock energy. The race footage builds toward a finish in which drummer Jim Macpherson crosses the line first, turning the band's informal competition into the video's punchline.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video dates from 1995, the year The Amps released their only album, also titled "Pacer."
  • The racing footage was filmed at Willow Springs Raceway in California, contrasting the band's rough-edged sound with the polished setting of a professional motorsports venue.
  • Jim Macpherson, best known as The Breeders' drummer, reportedly wins the race shown in the video.
  • The Amps began as a Kim Deal project during The Breeders' hiatus. The lineup expanded to include Macpherson and Dayton musicians Luis Lerma and Nate Farley.
  • "Pacer" was recorded at seven different studios, with engineers including Steve Albini, John Agnello, Bryce Goggin, Doug Easley, and Davis McCain.

I will be better to fly tonight
I need to learn
How you look so well
And you glow
I want to know
