Synopsis

Punkture Sluts' "No Hopah" plunges its performers into a grim, disorienting nightmare inside a derelict building. The video moves through corridors, cages and abandoned rooms, where a trapped figure confronts images of menace and confinement. A fire hula dancer, a sinister clown, a skull-faced knife player and flickering projections add to the sense of psychological unease. Rapid editing, flashing lights and extreme fisheye photography turn the setting into a circular, hallucinatory maze in which escape never seems possible.

Factoids & Trivia

• "No Hopah" was the first single by the London underground beat makers Punkture Sluts.

• The production used a burnt-out building in Haggerston, East London. Its peeling wallpaper, grimy rooms, cage and boiler room were already close to the video's intended dystopian aesthetic.

• The band and the production team developed the visual approach from a shared mood board. Inspirations included dystopian fiction, "1984," "Alice in Wonderland," and the work of Jim Jarmusch, Bjork and Michel Gondry.

• Fire performer Anna Hulagan appears in a cage sequence. Her hula fire performance was filmed at very close range, making the shoot physically challenging for the crew.

• Footage of the fire performance was projected onto the walls of the derelict rooms, turning material from the shoot into part of the location's texture.

• The video deliberately favors fragmented, heavily layered editing. Large blocks of footage were cut into very short pieces and overlaid to create its experimental, unstable look.

• The production made extensive use of a fisheye lens. The crew reportedly concluded that the video's images looked better with the distorted perspective.

• The band lineup described during production was Babs on vocals, Steve handling beeps, clicks, bass and guitar, and Nick on drums.

• The video was officially selected for the 2013 London Short Film Festival, Aesthetica Short Film Festival in York, and the International Short Film Festival Detmold in Germany.

• The video carries a flashing-images warning and contains adult language.
