Synopsis

Cass McCombs performs "Brighter!" in a dark room while images of Karen Black are projected across his body and the surrounding space. The footage combines scenes from Black's films with intimate material from a rehearsal session, creating the impression that her presence is flickering through memory. Fire, sparks, and burning imagery add a restless, almost spiritual quality. Rather than presenting a conventional performance narrative, the video turns McCombs into a screen for recollection, framing the song as an elegy for Black and for the elusive nature of memory.

Factoids & Trivia

• Cass McCombs recorded "Brighter!" with Karen Black in December 2012. Black sings the entire song, making the track an unusual collaboration in which McCombs does not provide the lead vocal.

• The video was released in January 2014, several months after Black died from cancer in August 2013. It consequently functions as both a music video and a posthumous tribute.

• Much of the clip consists of excerpts from Black's films, mixing familiar performances with less widely recognized material. The selection emphasizes her screen presence rather than following the plot of any one movie.
