Synopsis

Set in a bleak industrial environment, the video follows Thomas Azier and a woman whose relationship is governed by desire, confinement, and escalating violence. The pair move through a grim apartment and abandoned-looking spaces as the woman's predatory impulses gradually surface. Their encounter culminates in a bloody sexual confrontation. The video's stark, low-fi imagery and unsettling intimacy turn Azier's dark electro-pop into a compact erotic horror piece inspired by Claire Denis' film "Trouble Every Day."

Factoids & Trivia

• The video was made as a homage to Claire Denis' 2001 erotic horror film "Trouble Every Day," rather than to Franz Kafka, despite the German title "Verwandlung," which translates as "Metamorphosis."

• It was shot on Hi8 using only available light. That deliberately rough method gives the clip its grainy, abrasive texture and helped shape its lo-fi horror atmosphere.

• The clip was filmed in the same Berlin building where Azier recorded much of his debut album "Hylas." An elevator sound from the building even became part of one of the album's tracks.

• The production's blood effects were made with beet juice. Azier later said he had not expected the result to look so convincing, while the record label reportedly found the finished video difficult to handle because of its graphic content.

• "Verwandlung" was screened at the 2014 Netherlands Film Festival as a four-minute short-form music video.

• The video won the Best Lo-Fi award at the 2014 Berlin Music Video Awards.
