Synopsis

A solitary church organist performs before a small congregation, but his ritual is intercut with a dangerous journey through Iceland's stark landscapes. He wanders across volcanic ground, black sand and glacial ice before being overwhelmed by the sea. Beneath the water, the imagery shifts into an eerie, dreamlike encounter with whales. The video turns the song's declaration of love into a portrait of isolation, longing and emotional surrender, using vast natural spaces to mirror the character's inner turmoil.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was shot in Iceland in October 2012 and released internationally on February 4, 2013.
  • Its locations include the geothermal area of Krysuvik, Reynisfjara black-sand beach, Solheimajokull glacier and Reykjavik's Frikirkja church.
  • The entire video is presented in black and white. Despite its otherworldly appearance, the Icelandic landscapes were filmed practically rather than created as CGI environments.
  • A powerful wave unexpectedly knocked Matvey Lykov down while filming at Reynisfjara. The accident was retained in the finished video, although the footage showing the crew getting soaked was not used.
  • Lykov, a Russian fashion model, also appeared in Woodkid's earlier video for "Iron." His clothing in "I Love You" was styled by Kris Van Assche.
  • Woodkid has described the song and video as being influenced by his experiences diving. He connected the physical depth of the ocean with emotional ideas of loneliness, danger and disconnection.
  • The production involved Iconoclast and Seize Zero Trois, with post-production handled by OneMore Production Paris. Arnaud Potier served as cinematographer.
  • The video was nominated for Best Music Video at the 2013 Camerimage International Film Festival and for Best Cinematography in a Video at the 2013 UK Music Video Awards.
  • "I Love You" was the third single from Woodkid's debut album, "The Golden Age." The video forms part of the larger visual world established by his earlier Woodkid releases.
