Synopsis
Four seemingly separate characters move through a dim, dreamlike world where ordinary surroundings give way to unsettling transformations. Their calm, almost expressionless behavior contrasts with images of bodily change, illness, violence, and death. The video unfolds as a chain of surreal encounters, with each character appearing to pass through a different stage of a larger life cycle. Continuous camera movement and seamless visual transitions connect the episodes, creating the impression that these isolated figures are linked by the same strange, unseen force.
Factoids & Trivia
- The video premiered on Pitchfork.tv on November 12, 2012, several months after "Lofticries" appeared on Purity Ring's debut album, *Shrines*.
- The clip is constructed from four continuous shots, each following a different character. Visual effects, color grading, and transitional work were handled by MPC's Los Angeles team.
- Caviar produced the video in Los Angeles. The production credits include cinematographer Michael Ragen, production designer Ashley Fenton, and special-effects makeup artist Emily Blackmun.
- Contemporary descriptions of the concept connected its imagery to a cycle of conception, birth, sickness, and death, while the video's official description emphasized psychically connected characters remaining stoic during surreal climaxes.
- Megan James said the video was not intended as a literal interpretation of the song. She and Corin Roddick appreciated that its visual approach came from an outside creative perspective.
- A separate fan-made video using footage from the film *Thriller: A Cruel Picture* was briefly mistaken for the official "Lofticries" video because it appeared around the song's release. Purity Ring clarified that it was unofficial but said they admired it.
