Synopsis

A troubled president is booked as a guest judge on the hit talent competition American Dreamz to repair his public image. The finalists include a ruthless aspiring singer determined to win at any cost and a reluctant contestant with a dangerous secret. As the live finale approaches, television spectacle, political manipulation, and a terrorist plot collide before a nationwide audience.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The film targets two institutions at once: televised singing competitions modeled on shows such as American Idol, and the political culture surrounding the George W. Bush administration.
  • Paul Weitz reportedly wrote the original screenplay before watching an episode of American Idol, making the film's similarities to the real competition format partly coincidental.
  • Martin Tweed's abrasive, self-important television persona was associated with Simon Cowell, who was one of the most recognizable talent-show judges of the period.
  • Interior White House scenes were filmed on the standing set built for the television series The West Wing.
  • Principal photography took place in Los Angeles between July 11 and September 25, 2005, including work at Los Angeles Center Studios.
  • The film's deliberately provocative premise was released at a time when political satire involving terrorism, presidential image-making, and post-9/11 anxiety remained especially contentious.
