Synopsis

Recently divorced preschool teacher Sarah Nolan is nudged back into dating by her well-meaning family, who create an online profile for her without permission. She meets Jake, a fellow divorcee with his own emotional baggage, and the two begin an awkward romance while Sarah also attracts attention from a seemingly more suitable widower. Her attempts to start over become complicated by family interference, old wounds, and uncertain expectations.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The film is based on Claire Cook's 2002 novel of the same name.
  • Gary David Goldberg reportedly invited John Cusack to revise any dialogue that did not feel natural for him. Cusack responded by sending approximately 35 pages of new dialogue for his character.
  • The Newfoundland named Mother Theresa was portrayed by two six-month-old puppies, Molly and Maeve. Molly handled most of the scenes, while Maeve performed the water sequence. Both puppies appeared together at the end of the film and were later adopted by Goldberg.
  • The stick-hopping game seen early in the film is based on tinikling, a traditional Filipino dance involving dancers stepping between moving bamboo poles.
  • The animal rescue table seen at the dog park represents Animal Avengers, a real rescue organization founded by Shannon Elizabeth.
  • The film was released theatrically in the United States on July 29, 2005, by Warner Bros. Pictures.
