Wiki

Biography

MGMT is an American rock duo formed in 2002 by Andrew VanWyngarden and Benjamin Goldwasser while the two were students at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. Originally known as The Management, the group began with a deliberately playful blend of electronic music, psychedelic rock, glam, and art-school experimentation. After changing their name to MGMT in 2005, they issued the independent Time to Pretend EP through Cantora Records.

MGMT's breakthrough came with Oracular Spectacular, released in 2007. Produced by Dave Fridmann, the album turned the duo's homemade synth-pop ideas into a vivid, highly polished form of psychedelic pop. Its singles "Time to Pretend", "Electric Feel", and "Kids" became international hits, while the album established VanWyngarden and Goldwasser as major figures in the late-2000s indie and alternative scenes. The record's combination of danceable electronic rhythms, distorted guitars, surreal imagery, and ambivalent lyrics about youth and ambition gave MGMT a distinctive identity. The band received Grammy nominations for Best New Artist and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals, while Justice's remix of "Electric Feel" won the Grammy for Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical.

Rather than repeat the formula of their debut, MGMT made Congratulations in 2010 as a more expansive and challenging record. The album moved away from concise synth-pop singles toward psychedelic rock, progressive arrangements, and densely layered production. Tracks such as "Flash Delirium", "Siberian Breaks", and "Song for Dan Treacy" reflected the duo's interest in 1960s psychedelia, progressive pop, and the eccentric traditions of British art rock. Its refusal to provide another obvious commercial hit divided some listeners, but it also confirmed that MGMT intended to develop on its own terms.

The self-titled MGMT, released in 2013, pushed that approach further. Made with producer Dave Fridmann, it was a darker and more abstract album built around shifting textures, noisy guitars, electronic effects, and unconventional song structures. Although less accessible than its predecessor, the record emphasized the duo's attraction to experimental pop and psychedelic rock. During this period, MGMT also contributed to outside projects and performed with an expanded touring lineup, while VanWyngarden and Goldwasser remained the band's creative core.

MGMT returned to a more immediate sound with Little Dark Age in 2018. The album combined new wave keyboards, gothic atmosphere, disco influences, and sharply melodic songwriting. Its title track, along with "When You Die" and "Me and Michael", brought the group renewed attention. "Little Dark Age" later found a substantial new audience through online video platforms, introducing MGMT's music to a younger generation.

Their fifth studio album, Loss of Life, appeared in 2024 through Mom + Pop. It retained the band's psychedelic instincts but favored warmer guitars, folk-rock touches, spacious arrangements, and a more reflective emotional tone. Songs including "Mother Nature", "Bubblegum Dog", "Nothing to Declare", and "Dancing in Babylon" showed MGMT balancing experimentation with direct melody. Across their career, the duo has remained notable for resisting easy categorization: their music can be playful, ornate, strange, melancholic, and commercially accessible without settling permanently into any one of those descriptions.
