Taio Cruz is the stage name of British singer, songwriter, producer and entrepreneur Adetayo Ayowale Onile-Ere. Born in London, Cruz emerged during the 2000s as part of a generation of British artists who combined contemporary R&B with polished pop and electronic dance production. His music is characterized by bright synthesizers, streamlined hooks and an emphasis on crossover appeal, qualities that helped him move successfully between the British and American markets.

Cruz began writing songs and experimenting with digital production while still at school. He secured a publishing deal as a teenager and initially built his reputation behind the scenes. One of his early high-profile successes came through co-writing Will Young's "Your Game," which became a major British hit and won the 2005 Brit Award for Best British Single. The achievement established Cruz as a capable songwriter before he had fully developed his own public identity.

He launched his recording career with the single "I Just Wanna Know" in 2006. The track introduced the Taio Cruz name and led to further releases including "Moving On" and "Come on Girl." His debut album, Departure, followed in 2008. Written and produced largely by Cruz himself, the album presented a more personal version of the futuristic urban-pop sound associated with his early work. It included "I Can Be" and "She's Like a Star," the latter becoming one of his best-known early songs and later receiving a popular remix featuring the Sugababes.

Cruz's international breakthrough came with his second album, Rokstarr, released in 2009. The album's first single, "Break Your Heart," paired Cruz's smooth vocal with a guest appearance by Ludacris and became a number-one hit in both the United Kingdom and the United States. Its music video used an extravagant, sunlit setting and luxury imagery to match the song's glossy, cosmopolitan presentation. The follow-up, "Dynamite," became an even broader pop phenomenon. Built around a simple, celebratory chorus and high-energy dance production, it turned Cruz into one of the defining hitmakers of the early 2010s.

The success of Rokstarr brought a series of prominent collaborations. Cruz recorded "Higher" with Kylie Minogue, appeared on David Guetta's "Little Bad Girl" alongside Ludacris, and released "Hangover" with Flo Rida. He also co-wrote songs for other artists, including Jennifer Lopez's "I'm Into You" and David Guetta and Usher's "Without You." These projects emphasized his versatility as a performer and songwriter, while his flamboyant sunglasses, sharply styled clothing and colorful videos became part of his recognizable pop image.

His third studio album, TY.O, arrived in 2011 and included "Hangover," "Troublemaker" and "There She Goes." That same period saw Cruz contribute "Telling the World" to the soundtrack of the animated film Rio. Although his commercial profile later became less dominant, he continued releasing music, appearing in videos and working across songwriting, production, fashion and business projects. Cruz's peak period remains closely associated with the exuberant, international dance-pop of the late 2000s and early 2010s, particularly the enduring anthems "Break Your Heart" and "Dynamite."
