Killer Mike is the stage name of Michael Santiago Render, an Atlanta rapper, actor, entrepreneur, and social commentator. Born on April 20, 1975, he emerged from the city's Dungeon Family circle and developed a forceful style built on Southern rap, political directness, and a commanding baritone delivery. Although his music often addresses racism, police violence, poverty, and economic inequality, his work also makes room for humor, autobiography, and regional pride.
Killer Mike first attracted national attention through his association with OutKast. He appeared on "Snappin' & Trappin'" from the duo's 2000 album *Stankonia*, and he contributed to the 2001 single "The Whole World." The latter won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group in 2002, establishing Mike as more than a local Atlanta talent. He also recorded with members of the Dungeon Family and appeared as a guest artist on tracks by artists including Jay-Z, Bone Crusher, and No Doubt.
His solo debut, *Monster*, was released by Columbia Records in 2003. The album included the single "A.D.I.D.A.S.," featuring Big Boi and Sleepy Brown, and reached the upper part of the Billboard 200. After leaving the major-label system, Mike emphasized independent production and launched the Grind Time Official imprint. Albums such as *I Pledge Allegiance to the Grind* (2006) and *I Pledge Allegiance to the Grind II* (2008) strengthened his connection to Atlanta's underground scene while allowing him to develop a more openly political voice.
A major turning point came with *R.A.P. Music* in 2012. Produced entirely by El-P, the album combined Mike's Southern-rooted delivery with stark, experimental production and became one of the most acclaimed records of his solo career. The collaboration continued when Mike and El-P formed Run the Jewels. Initially conceived as a one-off project, the duo released *Run the Jewels* in 2013, followed by *Run the Jewels 2* (2014), *Run the Jewels 3* (2016), and *RTJ4* (2020). Their music united dense production, aggressive performances, dark humor, and pointed commentary on power and inequality. The group also became known for energetic live shows and a strong international following.
Mike's public profile expanded through television, interviews, and political engagement. He was a prominent supporter of Bernie Sanders during the 2016 and 2020 presidential campaigns, and he served on the transition team of Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms. In 2019, he hosted the Netflix documentary series *Trigger Warning with Killer Mike*, which examined social and economic issues affecting Black communities. He has also operated businesses in Atlanta, including the SWAG Shop barbershop concept, linking his public work to local entrepreneurship.
After more than a decade focused largely on Run the Jewels, Mike returned to solo work with *Michael* in 2023. Drawing on gospel, soul, funk, and Southern hip-hop, the album was his most personal statement, connecting his public activism with stories about family, faith, community, and identity. It won the 2024 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album, while "Scientists & Engineers," featuring Andre 3000, Future, and Eryn Allen Kane, won Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance. The gospel-oriented project *Songs for Sinners & Saints*, credited to Michael & the Mighty Midnight Revival, followed in August 2024. Together, his solo records and Run the Jewels work have made Killer Mike one of contemporary hip-hop's most distinctive Atlanta voices.
