Peter Alexander Makkay, known professionally as Peter Maffay, is a Romanian-born German singer, guitarist, composer and producer. Born on August 30, 1949, in Brasov, Romania, he moved with his family to West Germany in 1963. He began playing music as a teenager and formed his first band, The Dukes, before working in local clubs and pursuing a professional career.
Maffay's breakthrough came in 1970 with the single "Du." Written by Christian Bruhn and German lyricist Georg Buschor, the romantic song became a major hit and established Maffay as a popular singer. His early records were associated with schlager, but during the second half of the 1970s he gradually moved toward a harder, more rock-oriented sound. Albums such as *Steppenwolf* (1979) and *Revanche* (1980) marked this transformation. The latter included "Uber sieben Brucken musst du gehn," a German-language adaptation of a song by the East German band Karat, and became one of the defining recordings of his career.
Maffay's music combined accessible melodies with a forceful vocal style and increasingly prominent electric guitars. He developed a particularly strong reputation as a live performer, working with a stable group of musicians that included guitarist and producer Carl Carlton, drummer Bertram Engel and keyboard player Jean-Jacques Kravetz. His concert productions helped make him one of the most commercially successful German-speaking rock artists. More than 20 of his albums have reached number one on the German album chart, an exceptional record in the history of German popular music.
A second major strand of Maffay's work began with *Tabaluga oder die Reise zur Vernunft* in 1983. Created with lyricist Rolf Zuckowski and other collaborators, the album introduced Tabaluga, a small green dragon whose adventures were told through songs, stories and stage productions. The character became a long-running family entertainment franchise, leading to further albums, musicals, tours, television projects and the animated film *Tabaluga - Der Film* in 2018. Tabaluga also enabled Maffay to reach younger audiences without abandoning his rock career.
Maffay has repeatedly used his albums to explore international collaboration. The 1998 project *Begegnungen* brought together musicians from different cultural backgrounds, including Aboriginal Australian performers and artists from Israel. He has also recorded with numerous German and international singers. In 2023, he joined Anastacia for "Just You," an English version of his earlier hit "So bist du."
His work has extended beyond music. Maffay appeared in the films *Lethal Obsession* (1987), *The Polar Bear* (1998) and *Captive in Yemen* (1999), and later took part in voice work for the German version of *Sing 2*. His social commitment has focused especially on children affected by violence, trauma and difficult living conditions. The Peter Maffay Foundation, established in 2000, supports therapeutic and educational projects in Germany, Spain and other countries.
In 2024, Maffay completed the "We Love Rock'n'Roll" Farewell Tour, presenting a retrospective of his major songs in large German venues. The tour marked his withdrawal from extensive touring and major concert stages, although it did not represent an end to his musical activities. After more than five decades, Peter Maffay remains a central figure in German rock, equally identified with stadium concerts, socially conscious projects and the enduring world of Tabaluga.
