Wiki

Biography

Norah Jones is an American singer, songwriter, pianist, and occasional actress whose music blends jazz, country, blues, folk, soul, and understated pop. Born Geetali Norah Shankar on March 30, 1979, in Brooklyn, New York, she is the daughter of Indian sitar virtuoso Ravi Shankar and concert producer Sue Jones. After her parents separated, she grew up primarily in the Dallas area, where she developed an early interest in jazz, piano, and vocal music. She later adopted the name Norah Jones and attended the Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts before studying jazz piano at the University of North Texas.

While still a student, Jones began performing in local clubs and earned recognition through the DownBeat Student Music Awards. She moved to New York City in 1999 and became part of the downtown music scene, working with musicians including guitarist Jesse Harris, bassist Lee Alexander, and drummer Dan Rieser. She also appeared with the experimental group Wax Poetic and collaborated with guitarist Charlie Hunter. These associations helped establish the relaxed, genre-blurring style that would define her early career.

Jones signed with Blue Note Records in 2001 after the label heard a series of demos. Her debut album, Come Away with Me, was released in 2002 and became an international breakthrough. Built around her warm, restrained vocals and lyrical piano playing, the album moved between jazz-inflected ballads, country-tinged songs, blues, and acoustic pop. The single "Don't Know Why," written by Jesse Harris, became her signature recording. The album eventually sold tens of millions of copies worldwide and won eight Grammy Awards, with Jones personally receiving five, including Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Best New Artist, and Best Pop Vocal Album.

Her second album, Feels Like Home (2004), continued her commercial success while emphasizing country and roots influences. It included "Sunrise" and the Ray Charles duet "Here We Go Again," which won major Grammy recognition. Rather than simply repeat the formula of her debut, Jones broadened her musical identity through a series of side projects. She joined the country-oriented ensemble the Little Willies and later formed the female trio Puss n Boots with Sasha Dobson and Catherine Popper.

With Not Too Late (2007), Jones took a more direct role in songwriting and presented a darker, more personal set of material. The Fall (2009) introduced a stronger alternative-pop and rock presence, while Little Broken Hearts (2012), produced with Brian Burton, also known as Danger Mouse, explored spare electronic textures and more sharply dramatic arrangements. She appeared as a performer in Wong Kar-wai's film My Blueberry Nights (2007), but music has remained the central focus of her career.

Jones returned to jazz-oriented territory with Day Breaks (2016), then adopted a more open-ended, collaborative approach on Pick Me Up Off the Floor (2020). Her ninth solo studio album, Visions, released in 2024, reunited her with producer Leon Michels and combined her familiar piano-led intimacy with blues, soul, and loose, rhythm-driven arrangements. Across her catalog, Jones has maintained a distinctive balance of accessibility and musicianship, earning a lasting place between contemporary pop, jazz, and American roots music.
