Wiki

Biography

The Breeders are an American alternative rock band formed in Dayton, Ohio, in 1989. Led by singer, guitarist and songwriter Kim Deal, the group developed a distinctive sound that combined abrasive guitars, melodic hooks, dry humor and unconventional song structures. Although Deal's work with the Pixies initially gave The Breeders much of their visibility, the band established an identity of its own and became one of the defining acts of the 1990s alternative rock movement.

Deal formed The Breeders as a side project with Tanya Donelly of Throwing Muses. The original recording lineup also included bassist Josephine Wiggs of The Perfect Disaster and drummer Britt Walford of Slint. Their debut album, Pod, was released by the British independent label 4AD in 1990. Produced by Steve Albini, the album was stark, tense and unusually intimate, with Deal's detached vocals set against jagged guitars and a rhythm section that could sound both mechanical and forceful. Songs such as "Doe," "Hellbound" and "Happiness Is a Warm Gun" helped establish The Breeders as a band capable of making unconventional music feel immediate.

The lineup changed before the group's commercial breakthrough. Deal's twin sister Kelley joined on guitar, despite having little previous experience with the instrument, while Donelly and Walford eventually departed. The resulting lineup, completed by drummer Jim Macpherson, recorded the Safari EP in 1992 and then Last Splash in 1993. The album expanded the band's range without sacrificing its rough edges, moving from quiet, unsettling passages to bright, distorted pop.

" Cannonball," the album's best-known track, became a major alternative radio hit and remains The Breeders' signature song. Its memorable bass line, sudden changes in texture and deliberately off-center vocal arrangement captured the band's ability to make catchy music sound strange. Last Splash went platinum in the United States, and The Breeders toured with Nirvana and appeared on the 1994 Lollapalooza festival.

The band's momentum was interrupted in the mid-1990s by substance abuse problems. During the resulting hiatus, Kim Deal formed The Amps and released the album Pacer in 1995. The Breeders later returned with changing lineups, issuing Title TK in 2002 and Mountain Battles in 2008. These albums showed a less commercially focused group, but retained Deal's gift for concise melodies, unexpected arrangements and emotionally guarded lyrics. The EP Fate to Fatal followed in 2009.

In 2013, the classic Last Splash lineup reunited for a tour marking the album's twentieth anniversary. The reunion eventually led to All Nerve, released in 2018. It was the first Breeders album made by Deal, Kelley Deal, Wiggs and Macpherson together since 1993. Tracks including "Wait in the Car," "Nervous Mary" and "All Nerve" demonstrated that the band's sound had matured without becoming polished or predictable. A 30th anniversary edition of Last Splash appeared in 2023.

The Breeders' lasting importance rests not only on "Cannonball," but on the contrast at the center of their music: noisy yet melodic, direct yet mysterious, and accessible without conforming to conventional rock formulas. Through numerous changes in activity and personnel, Kim Deal's songwriting has remained the band's defining force.
