Simply Red are an English pop and soul band formed in Manchester in 1985 and led throughout their career by singer and songwriter Mick Hucknall. Their music combines blue-eyed soul, pop, R&B, soft rock, jazz and elements of the sophisticated pop style associated with the 1980s. Although the lineup has changed repeatedly, Hucknall has remained the band's defining voice and only continuous original member.
The group developed after the breakup of Hucknall's post-punk band the Frantic Elevators. He assembled a new lineup with musicians connected to Manchester's alternative music scene, including bassist Tony Bowers, keyboard player Fritz McIntyre, drummer Chris Joyce, guitarist David Fryman and multi-instrumentalist Tim Kellett. The name Simply Red grew out of Hucknall's nickname, referring to his red hair, and also reflected his support for Manchester United.
Simply Red's debut single, "Money's Too Tight (To Mention)," was a version of a song by the Valentine Brothers. Released in 1985, it introduced the band as a pop act with a strong soul foundation and became an international hit. The same year, the album *Picture Book* established their commercial identity. Its most enduring song was "Holding Back the Years," a Hucknall composition whose restrained arrangement and melancholy vocal performance carried it to the top of the US Billboard Hot 100 and into the upper reaches of charts worldwide.
The second album, *Men and Women* (1987), expanded the band's palette with a more polished production style. Their major breakthrough followed with *A New Flame* (1989), which included "If You Don't Know Me by Now." The band's interpretation of the Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes classic became another US number one and one of Simply Red's best-known recordings. The success also demonstrated the band's characteristic balance between original material and carefully selected covers.
Simply Red reached their commercial peak with *Stars* (1991). Built around songs such as "Stars," "Something Got Me Started" and "For Your Babies," the album became a major success in Britain and across Europe. It was the best-selling album in the United Kingdom in both 1991 and 1992, an unusual achievement that confirmed Simply Red as one of the leading mainstream acts of the period. The following albums *Life* (1995) and *Blue* (1998) continued their run of successful releases. "Fairground," from *Life*, became their first UK number one single, while *Blue* extended their sequence of commercially dominant albums.
By the late 1990s, Simply Red had increasingly functioned as Hucknall's creative vehicle rather than a stable collaborative band. Nevertheless, the group continued to tour and record, moving through changes in personnel and production while retaining its soul-pop character. Later releases included *Home* (2003), *Simplified* (2005), *Stay* (2007) and *Big Love* (2015), the latter arriving after the band's announced split in 2010 and subsequent return to activity.
The albums *Blue Eyed Soul* (2019) and *Time* (2023) showed the band continuing to work within its established musical language while introducing new songs. In 2025, Simply Red marked their 40th anniversary with extensive touring, a concert film and *Recollections*, a collection of newly recorded versions of songs from across their catalog. Their lasting appeal rests on Hucknall's expressive tenor, the band's affinity for classic soul songwriting and a repertoire that has remained familiar across several generations.
