Megadeth is an American heavy metal band formed in Los Angeles in 1983 by vocalist and guitarist Dave Mustaine. Emerging from the early-1980s metal underground, the group became one of the principal architects of American thrash metal alongside Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax. Megadeth's music is defined by rapid tempos, intricate guitar work, shifting rhythms, aggressive vocals, and lyrics focused on war, political corruption, nuclear anxiety, social control, and personal conflict.
Mustaine founded Megadeth after leaving Metallica, where he had been a guitarist and songwriter. He built the new band around a more technically demanding and confrontational style, initially working with bassist David Ellefson, guitarist Greg Handevidt, and drummer Dijon Carruthers. The lineup changed before the release of the debut album, and Gar Samuelson and Chris Poland joined Mustaine and Ellefson for Killing Is My Business... and Business Is Good! in 1985. Although the album was recorded on a limited budget, its speed, raw production, and complex arrangements established the band's identity.
Megadeth expanded its audience with Peace Sells... but Who's Buying? in 1986. The title track and "Wake Up Dead" became enduring examples of the band's combination of political commentary and technically precise thrash. After further lineup changes, So Far, So Good... So What! appeared in 1988, preceding the classic lineup of Mustaine, Ellefson, guitarist Marty Friedman, and drummer Nick Menza.
That lineup produced Rust in Peace in 1990, widely regarded as one of the landmark albums of the thrash metal era. Songs such as "Holy Wars... The Punishment Due," "Hangar 18," and "Tornado of Souls" highlighted the band's musicianship while preserving its speed and aggression. Countdown to Extinction followed in 1992 and gave Megadeth its broadest commercial breakthrough. Tracks including "Symphony of Destruction," "Sweating Bullets," and "Skin o' My Teeth" helped the band reach a larger mainstream audience without abandoning its heavy-metal foundation.
During the 1990s, Megadeth continued to evolve. Youthanasia adopted a heavier and more controlled sound, while Cryptic Writings and Risk moved further toward accessible songwriting and hard rock. The changes divided opinion among longtime fans but demonstrated Mustaine's willingness to reshape the band's sound. After The World Needs a Hero in 2001, Megadeth disbanded in 2002 when Mustaine suffered a serious arm injury. The group returned in 2004, beginning another period of personnel changes and recording.
The later catalog includes The System Has Failed, United Abominations, Endgame, Th1rt3en, Super Collider, Dystopia, and The Sick, the Dying... and the Dead!. Dystopia won the 2017 GRAMMY Award for Best Metal Performance, giving Megadeth its first GRAMMY after numerous nominations. The band has also remained a major international touring act and a central reference point for modern thrash metal.
Megadeth's seventeenth studio album, Megadeth, was released on January 23, 2026, and was announced as the band's final studio album. The lineup for this closing era consists of Mustaine, guitarist Teemu Mantysaari, bassist James LoMenzo, and drummer Dirk Verbeuren. With Mustaine as its only constant member, Megadeth's history is marked by instability, reinvention, and a persistent commitment to technically ambitious heavy metal.
