Ice-T is the professional name of Tracy Lauren Marrow (born February 16, 1958, in Newark, New Jersey), an American rapper, actor, producer, and heavy metal vocalist. Raised mainly in South Los Angeles, he became one of the defining figures in the development of West Coast gangsta rap. His stage name was inspired by Iceberg Slim, whose books and street narratives influenced Marrow's early writing.
Ice-T began recording in the early 1980s, when hip-hop was still closely associated with electro and party music. His early independent singles established a direct, cinematic style built around street reporting, explicit storytelling, and sharp social observation. He also appeared in the hip-hop films *Breakin'*, *Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo*, and *Rappin'*, experiences that helped establish his public profile beyond music.
His major-label debut, *Rhyme Pays*, arrived on Sire Records in 1987. The album combined club-oriented production with unusually hard-edged subject matter and became one of the early rap releases to carry an explicit-content label. Ice-T developed his approach on *Power* (1988) and *The Iceberg/Freedom of Speech... Just Watch What You Say!* (1989), records that balanced gangsta imagery with political criticism, commentary on racism, and challenges to censorship.
His most influential solo album, *O.G. Original Gangster*, was released in 1991. It presented Ice-T as both a street narrator and a socially conscious writer, while the song "New Jack Hustler" connected his music to his role in the film *New Jack City*. The album also introduced Body Count, a metal band formed around Ice-T's long-standing interest in heavy music. Body Count's self-titled 1992 album contained "Cop Killer," a confrontational song that became the center of a national debate over violent lyrics, artistic freedom, and police authority. The controversy led to intense public and political criticism, and Ice-T eventually left Sire/Warner Bros. He released *Home Invasion* on Priority Records in 1993.
Although he continued making solo rap records, including *VI: Return of the Real* (1996), *7th Deadly Sin* (1999), and *Gangsta Rap* (2006), acting gradually became a larger part of his career. His film work included roles in *New Jack City*, *Ricochet*, *Tank Girl*, and *Johnny Mnemonic*. In 2000, he joined the cast of *Law & Order: Special Victims Unit* as Detective Odafin "Fin" Tutuola, a role that became his longest-running screen performance. The casting created an enduring contrast between his earlier reputation as the performer of "Cop Killer" and his portrayal of a police detective.
Ice-T has never fully abandoned music. Body Count remained active through successive albums and tours, and the band won the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance for "Bum-Rush" in 2021. Ice-T has also appeared as a guest artist, producer, narrator, and documentary participant, including the 2012 film *Something from Nothing: The Art of Rap*. His later releases and archival projects, including *The Legend of Ice-T: Crime Stories* (2023), have reinforced his position as a link between early hip-hop, hard rock, film, and television. His career is notable not only for its longevity, but also for the way it moved between provocation and mainstream visibility without abandoning his blunt artistic voice.
