God Lives Underwater was an American industrial rock and electronic rock band formed in 1993 in Perkiomenville, Pennsylvania. Built around vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and programmer David Reilly and guitarist, bassist, keyboardist, and programmer Jeff Turzo, the group combined guitar-based alternative rock with techno rhythms, sampled textures, synthesizers, and studio manipulation. The result placed them within the 1990s industrial and alternative metal scenes, although their songwriting often aimed beyond genre conventions.
Reilly and Turzo had grown up in the same small Pennsylvania community and had experimented with computers, keyboards, and home recording equipment before forming the band. Their first material was developed from a track created for a party, followed by a six-song demo recorded in late 1993. The pair circulated the music independently until it reached Rick Rubin, who signed them to American Recordings, then operating through its Onion imprint.
The self-titled *God Lives Underwater* EP was initially self-released in 1994 and received a wider release in early 1995. To turn the recording project into a touring act, Reilly and Turzo added guitarist Andrew McGee and drummer Adam Kary. The EP introduced the band's tense mixture of distorted guitars, programmed beats, and darkly melodic vocals. "No More Love" became its most visible track, while "All Wrong" and "Don't Know How to Be" helped establish the group on alternative and industrial radio. Their music also found an audience through film: "Drag Me Down" appeared in *The Doom Generation*, and "No More Love" was used during the closing credits of *Johnny Mnemonic*.
God Lives Underwater's first full-length album, *Empty*, arrived in 1995. It retained the electronic pulse of the EP but expanded the band's rock presence, with heavier guitars and more developed arrangements. The album received attention on the alternative circuit and led to extensive touring, including shows with KMFDM, Filter, Far, and Spacehog. The band also contributed music to the video game *Slamscape* and supplied the track "Weight" to the *Mortal Kombat: More Kombat* compilation.
A change in the rhythm section preceded the band's greatest commercial period. Scott Garrett replaced Kary in 1998, and God Lives Underwater moved into a partnership involving 1500 Records and A&M Records. The resulting album, *Life in the So-Called Space Age*, refined the balance between accessible rock songwriting and synthetic production. Its lead single, "From Your Mouth," became the band's signature song, reaching alternative radio and receiving substantial MTV exposure. The striking music video, directed by Roman Coppola, used reverse-motion imagery and helped the single stand out during a crowded late-1990s music-video era. The album became the group's best-selling release and brought them their broadest audience.
The band later became involved with *For the Masses*, a Depeche Mode tribute album released in 1998. God Lives Underwater contributed a version of "Fly on the Windscreen" and helped organize the project, which also featured artists including the Cure, Failure, the Smashing Pumpkins, and the Deftones.
Recording difficulties, label problems, and internal changes delayed the next album. *Up Off the Floor* was finally issued in 2004 through Locomotive Records, but limited promotion and technical problems surrounding the release weakened its impact. God Lives Underwater subsequently became inactive. Reilly died on October 16, 2005, at age 34. Turzo later formed Wired All Wrong with Matt Mahaffey of Self, joined by McGee and Garrett at various points. God Lives Underwater remains remembered for its distinctive fusion of industrial electronics, alternative rock, and emotionally charged songwriting.
