Arctic Monkeys are an English rock band formed in Sheffield in 2002. The group consists of singer, guitarist and principal songwriter Alex Turner, guitarist Jamie Cook, drummer Matt Helders, and bassist Nick O'Malley. Original bassist Andy Nicholson left the band in 2006, shortly after the release of their debut album. Known for sharp observational lyrics, restless musical development, and an unusually direct connection with early online music culture, Arctic Monkeys became one of the defining British rock acts of the 21st century.
Turner, Helders, Nicholson and Cook began rehearsing as teenagers and played their first concert in Sheffield in June 2003. Early demo recordings were copied and shared by fans, helping the band build a following before they had signed a record deal. This word-of-mouth growth, assisted by internet file sharing and music blogs, made Arctic Monkeys one of the first major bands to emerge through online fan activity rather than traditional industry promotion. Their first EP, Five Minutes with the Arctic Monkeys, appeared in 2005, the same year they signed with the independent label Domino Recording Company.
The singles "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor" and "When the Sun Goes Down" both reached number one in the United Kingdom. Their debut album, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, followed in January 2006. Built around Turner's detailed portraits of nightlife, provincial social life, desire and youthful bravado, the record combined fast guitar music with unusually literate songwriting. It became the fastest-selling debut album in British chart history at the time and earned the Mercury Prize. Songs such as "The View from the Afternoon", "Mardy Bum" and "A Certain Romance" established the band's energetic early style, while the accompanying videos helped turn the group into a major visual and live attraction.
Favourite Worst Nightmare arrived in 2007 and showed a harder, more urgent version of the band. Tracks including "Brianstorm", "Fluorescent Adolescent" and "505" expanded their emotional range without abandoning their rhythmic drive. The album continued Arctic Monkeys' run of number one studio albums in the UK and confirmed that their success was not dependent on the novelty of their debut.
With Humbug (2009), the band made a marked change in direction. Recorded partly in the United States with Queens of the Stone Age's Josh Homme, the album introduced darker guitar textures, heavier arrangements and a more mysterious atmosphere. Suck It and See (2011) balanced this experimentation with brighter melodies and more open romantic writing. During this period, Turner also developed The Last Shadow Puppets with Miles Kane, a project that explored orchestral pop and broadened his work as a songwriter.
Arctic Monkeys reached a new international peak with AM (2013). Combining hard-edged riffs, hip-hop-influenced rhythms, falsetto vocals and nocturnal romanticism, the album produced enduring tracks such as "Do I Wanna Know?", "Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High?" and "Arabella". It became the band's fifth consecutive UK number one studio album and significantly increased their profile in the United States and elsewhere.
The group continued to resist repetition. Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino (2018) replaced much of the guitar-driven attack with piano, lounge-pop arrangements and science-fiction imagery, while The Car (2022) developed its cinematic orchestration and reflective mood. Across seven studio albums, Arctic Monkeys have moved from Sheffield indie rock to ambitious, genre-conscious songwriting while retaining Turner's interest in character, language and performance. Their career is defined less by a single fixed sound than by a willingness to reinvent the band without losing its identity.
