Eagle-Eye Cherry is the professional name of Eagle-Eye Lanoo Cherry, a Swedish singer-songwriter, guitarist and occasional actor born in Stockholm on May 7, 1968. He emerged internationally in the late 1990s with a melodic form of alternative pop-rock that combined acoustic guitar, understated funk, blues touches and carefully shaped radio hooks. Although he comes from a distinguished musical family, Cherry developed a style that is more intimate and song-centered than the experimental jazz associated with his father, trumpeter Don Cherry.
Cherry spent part of his youth in Sweden and later moved with his family to New York. He attended the High School of Performing Arts, where he initially concentrated on acting and also played drums in several bands. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, he appeared in small film and television roles, including parts in Arthur 2: On the Rocks, Born on the Fourth of July, The Doors and the television series South Beach. Acting, however, gradually gave way to songwriting as he became more interested in controlling the creative direction of his own work.
After Don Cherry's death in 1995, Eagle-Eye returned to Sweden and began working seriously on music. He wrote and recorded much of his first album in a home studio, using acoustic guitar and a direct singer-songwriter approach. The result was Desireless, initially released in 1997. Its lead single, "Save Tonight", became a major international hit. Built around a persistent acoustic riff, a relaxed vocal delivery and a lyric about making the most of a final evening together, the song reached the Top Five in the United States and the United Kingdom and became one of the most recognizable pop-rock singles of the decade. Desireless reached high chart positions in Sweden and several other European countries, earned platinum certification in the United States and reportedly sold several million copies worldwide.
Cherry followed the success with Living in the Present Future in 2000. The album expanded his sound without abandoning the accessible songwriting that had defined his debut. It included "Are You Still Having Fun?", "Feels So Right" and "Long Way Around", a collaboration with his half-sister Neneh Cherry. For the American market, the material was issued in a revised form as Present/Future.
His third album, Sub Rosa, appeared in 2003 and continued his collaboration with producers and musicians from the Scandinavian pop and rock scenes. The record produced songs such as "Skull Tattoo" and "Don't Give Up", the latter also appearing in connection with the soundtrack to the film Holes. Cherry additionally contributed vocals to "Wishing It Was" on Santana's 1999 album Supernatural, demonstrating that his work could sit comfortably within a broader rock setting.
After Sub Rosa, Cherry released Can't Get Enough in 2012 and Streets of You in 2018. The latter was issued through his own Papa Cherry label and reflected a more independent phase of his career. He returned with Back on Track in 2023, drawing on the post-punk and new wave records that had influenced him as a teenager. His seventh studio album, Become a Light, was released on September 26, 2025. Across these later records, Cherry has maintained a focus on concise melodies, reflective lyrics and a warm, organic performance style, while moving beyond the shadow of his defining hit.
