Daft Punk were a French electronic music duo formed in Paris in 1993 by Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo. The pair had previously played in the short-lived indie rock group Darlin' with Laurent Brancowitz, later a member of Phoenix. Their first release, "The New Wave," appeared on the British label Soma Quality Recordings in 1994. The follow-up single "Da Funk" established the duo internationally and became one of the defining records of the French house movement. Daft Punk's debut album, Homework, arrived in 1997. Built from hard-edged drum machines, distorted bass and repeated vocal fragments, it presented dance music as both club material and carefully shaped studio art. "Around the World" became its best-known single, while the accompanying video, directed by Michel Gondry, translated the track's repetitive musical structure into a choreographed visual system. With Discovery in 2001, Daft Punk made a deliberate turn toward a brighter, more melodic and pop-oriented sound. The album drew on disco, funk, soft rock, rhythm and blues, and 1980s synth-pop, producing major singles including "One More Time," "Digital Love," and "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger." Around this period, Bangalter and de Homem-Christo began appearing publicly as anonymous robots, using helmets, gloves and tailored costumes to make the group function as a self-contained fictional world rather than a conventional celebrity act. The album's songs were later combined with animation by Leiji Matsumoto in the feature-length Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem. The project's visual identity extended Daft Punk's interest in music videos, film and narrative presentation.
The duo followed with Human After All in 2005, a more austere and repetitive record that received a mixed critical response. Its singles included "Robot Rock," "Technologic," and "The Prime Time of Your Life." Daft Punk also directed Electroma, an experimental science-fiction film about two robots searching for human identity. Their live performances became increasingly important, especially during the 2006-07 tour, when a pyramid-shaped stage turned their catalog into large-scale audiovisual compositions. For the soundtrack to the 2010 film TRON: Legacy, Daft Punk combined orchestral writing with electronic production and made a brief on-screen appearance. Their fourth studio album, Random Access Memories, followed in 2013. Featuring collaborators such as Nile Rodgers, Pharrell Williams, Giorgio Moroder and Paul Williams, it replaced much of the duo's earlier machine-driven immediacy with live musicianship, analog textures and an overt interest in recording history. Daft Punk later collaborated with The Weeknd on the singles "Starboy" and "I Feel It Coming." On February 22, 2021, the duo announced its separation through "Epilogue," an excerpt from Electroma bearing the dates "1993-2021."
