Ashanti Shequoiya Douglas (born October 13, 1980), known professionally as Ashanti, is an American singer, songwriter, actress, and author. She emerged as one of the defining voices of early-2000s contemporary R&B, combining melodic pop hooks, hip-hop-oriented production, and lyrics centered on romance, independence, and emotional conflict.
Born in Glen Cove, New York, Ashanti began performing at an early age. Her mother, a former dance teacher, encouraged her musical development, while Ashanti also wrote songs and appeared in small acting and dance roles as a child. She initially pursued recording opportunities with several labels before attracting the attention of producer Irv Gotti, who signed her to Murder Inc. Records, then associated with Def Jam Recordings.
Before releasing a solo album, Ashanti became prominent through guest appearances. Her vocals on Ja Rule's "Always on Time" and Fat Joe's "What's Luv?" placed her alongside two of hip-hop's most successful performers in 2002. During this period, Ashanti expanded her acting career. She appeared in Coach Carter, The Muppets' Wizard of Oz, John Tucker Must Die, and Resident Evil: Extinction. Her film work complemented rather than replaced her recording career, and she continued to release music while taking on screen roles.
The Declaration, released in 2008, became her final album associated with Murder Inc. She later returned with Braveheart in 2014, an independently released project featuring collaborations with artists including Rick Ross and French Montana. In the following years, she remained active through singles, guest appearances, live performances, acting projects, and publishing.
