Fabolous (born John David Jackson on November 18, 1977) is an American rapper and songwriter from Brooklyn, New York. Known for his polished flow, intricate wordplay, and ability to move between street-oriented rap and melodic crossover records, he became one of the leading New York hip-hop artists of the early 2000s.
Jackson began attracting attention through freestyle appearances on DJ Clue's radio show on Hot 97. His performances led to a recording deal with Desert Storm Records, DJ Clue's label, which operated in partnership with Elektra Records. Fabolous first appeared on a number of mixtapes and collaborations before establishing himself as a solo artist. His breakout single, "Can't Deny It," featured Nate Dogg and became a Top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2001.
Fabolous' debut album, Ghetto Fabolous, was released in September 2001. It entered the Billboard 200 at number four and was eventually certified platinum in the United States. The album also produced "Young'n (Holla Back)," a hit built around production from the Neptunes, and "Trade It All," featuring Jagged Edge. The project introduced the balance that would define much of his career: hard-edged rhymes alongside radio-friendly hooks and a strong interest in fashion, luxury, and romantic relationships.
His second album, Street Dreams, followed in 2003 and became another platinum success. It included "Can't Let You Go," with Lil' Mo and Mike Shorey, and "Into You," which drew on Tamia's earlier R&B recording and became one of Fabolous' biggest pop hits. The accompanying mixtape More Street Dreams, Pt. 2: The Mixtape further strengthened his reputation as a versatile lyricist and gave greater space to his crew and underground collaborations.
After moving to Atlantic Records, Fabolous released Real Talk in 2004. Its most recognized track, "Breathe," was produced by Just Blaze and became a prominent example of his forceful delivery over a dramatic, sample-driven beat. In 2006, he signed with Def Jam Recordings and established the Street Family label imprint.
The albums From Nothin' to Somethin (2007) and Loso's Way (2009) marked a particularly successful period. The former included "Make Me Better," featuring Ne-Yo, while Loso's Way produced the singles "My Time" and "Throw It in the Bag." Loso's Way became his first album to reach number one on the Billboard 200. Its single "Money Goes, Honey Stay," featuring Jay-Z, earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group.
Fabolous has also maintained a strong mixtape presence. Projects such as There Is No Competition, The Soul Tape series, and Summertime Shootout allowed him to experiment more freely than on his major-label albums. He released The Young OG Project in 2014 and collaborated with Jadakiss on Friday on Elm Street in 2017. Summertime Shootout 3: Coldest Summer Ever followed in 2019, combining contemporary production with the lyrical focus associated with his earlier work.
In the 2020s, Fabolous has remained active through guest appearances, singles, freestyles, and collaborative recordings. His 2024 project The Leaks continued his preference for concise, lyric-centered material. Across more than two decades, he has built a durable career by combining technical rapping with commercial instincts while retaining a distinct Brooklyn identity.
