Alicia Keys (born Alicia Augello Cook on January 25, 1981) is an American singer, songwriter, pianist, producer, actress, author, and entrepreneur. Raised in New York City's Hell's Kitchen neighborhood, she began piano lessons as a child and developed a musical identity shaped by classical technique, soul, R&B, jazz, and hip-hop. Her ability to combine a strong, expressive voice with prominent piano playing became central to her public image and distinguished her from many of her early-2000s pop contemporaries.
Keys began writing songs as a teenager and signed with Columbia Records before moving to J Records, where she worked with label executive Clive Davis. Her memoir, More Myself: A Journey, was published in 2020. In 2024, Keys became a Broadway producer and creative force behind Hell's Kitchen, a musical inspired by her New York upbringing and built around original songs and celebrated tracks from her catalog. The production received 13 Tony Award nominations and won two acting awards.
