Synopsis

Ministry's "Stigmata" is presented as a frantic industrial collage rather than a conventional narrative. Grainy black-and-white images of machinery, gears, chains, symbols, buildings, and shadowy figures are cut against footage of the band performing. Paul Barker rides a motorcycle, while several people have their heads shaved and rapid flashes of eyes punctuate the song's most intense passages. The largely monochrome imagery is broken by brief bursts of color, giving the video a harsh, mechanical, and confrontational visual character.

Factoids & Trivia

  • Released in 1988, "Stigmata" was the only single from Ministry's third album, *The Land of Rape and Honey*.
  • The video helped bring Ministry's industrial sound to a wider audience and reportedly received regular MTV exposure during the late 1980s.
  • Its visual language mirrors the band's musical shift away from synth-pop toward a heavier mixture of distorted guitars, drum machines, tape loops, and industrial noise.
  • The video is notable for reserving most of its color footage for rapid, strobe-like shots of eyes. The contrast makes those images stand out against the otherwise abrasive black-and-white photography.
  • "Stigmata" was later included in Ministry's video compilation *Tapes of Wrath*, which collected promotional clips from several periods of the band's career.
  • The song became one of Ministry's signature tracks despite Al Jourgensen later describing it as too simplistic and criticizing its reliance on sampled rather than live guitars.
  • Jourgensen wrote the song at the last minute while completing *The Land of Rape and Honey*, after realizing that the album needed another track.
  • The song appeared in the 1990 science-fiction film *Hardware*. In the film, however, the on-screen performers are Gwar rather than Ministry, creating one of the track's more unusual screen appearances.

Lyrics

Stronger than reason
Stronger than lies
The only truth I know
Is the look in your eyes
... The look in your eyes

Just like a car crash
Just like a knife
My favorite weapon
Is the look in your eyes
You've run out of lies

You've run out of lies
...
