Synopsis

Kate Bush performs "The Man with the Child in His Eyes" in a dreamlike studio setting. Seated and reclining on a transparent platform, she appears to float within a glowing, misty space while the camera alternates between intimate close-ups and mirrored images. The minimalist presentation keeps attention on Bush's youthful yet highly expressive performance, matching the song's tender, reflective mood. Rather than illustrating a literal storyline, the video creates an ethereal portrait of the singer suspended between childhood wonder, romantic imagination, and adult emotion.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was recorded on April 25, 1978, at Blanford W10 Studios in Ladbroke Grove, London. The studio occupied a former cinema near Ladbroke Grove tube station.
  • Bush was positioned on a transparent acrylic sheet measuring approximately 8 by 6 feet and about one inch thick. Lighting from beneath the sheet created the impression that she was floating.
  • The hazy glow was achieved with specially selected fog filters placed on the camera. The cinematography used the filters much more heavily than their usual television application, producing the video's soft halo effect.
  • The mirrored imagery was created mechanically rather than digitally. Because the cameras lacked a simple image-reversal function, the equipment was modified by rewiring the picture-tube yokes.
  • Bush wrote the song when she was 13. It was recorded before the release of her 1978 debut album, The Kick Inside, and became her second UK single.
  • The song reached No. 6 on the UK singles chart and later won the 1979 Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding British Lyric.
  • Bush said the song reflected her belief that many men retain a childlike sense of wonder, and that this quality can create a special connection with a younger woman who shares that outlook.

Lyrics

("He's here! He's here!
He's here! He's here!")

I hear him, before I go to sleep
And focus on the day that's been.
I realise he's there,
When I turn the light off and turn over.

Nobody knows about my man.
They think he's lost on some horizon.
And suddenly I find myself
Listening to a man I've never known before,

Telling me about the sea,
...
