Synopsis

Debbie Gibson plays a young performer haunted by the breakup of a relationship she now regrets. Between scenes of New York City, she sings in a coffee shop and prepares for a show while trying to reconnect with her former boyfriend. He repeatedly rejects her attempts, leaving their relationship unresolved. Near the end, he arrives outside the venue with flowers, but loses his nerve, throws them away, and walks off as Gibson performs inside.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was filmed in New York City, with some footage shot at South Street Seaport during the 1988 St. Patrick's Day celebrations.
  • Gibson wore clothing that belonged to her older sister Michele.
  • A young skateboarder who takes Gibson's bouquet was her real-life cousin. An alternate ending was considered in which he returned later and gave the flowers back to Gibson, but that idea was abandoned.
  • "Foolish Beat" became Gibson's first No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100, reaching the top spot on June 25, 1988.
  • The song made Gibson the youngest female artist to write, produce, and perform a U.S. No. 1 single entirely on her own, a distinction associated with her late-1980s breakthrough.

Lyrics

VERSE 1:
There was a time when
Broken hearts and broken dreams
Were over.
There was a place where
All you could do was
Wish on a four leaf clover.

But now is a new time
There is a new place
Where dreams just can't come true.
It started the day when I left you
