Synopsis

Lisa Loeb performs in a dreamlike, water-filled setting as the song's uneasy breakup narrative unfolds around her. Wearing a carefully designed outfit and her trademark glasses, she moves through dark, reflective spaces while water, splashes, and fleeting guitar images give the video a surreal, unsettled atmosphere. The visual approach mirrors the song's emotional confusion: the relationship is over, but Loeb remains caught between independence, longing, and the obsessive question of whether her former partner still thinks about her.

Factoids & Trivia

  • "Do You Sleep?" was released in 1995 as part of Lisa Loeb & Nine Stories' debut album, *Tails*, which was later certified gold in the United States.
  • The song had originally appeared in an earlier form on Loeb's independently circulated 1992 release, *Purple Tape*, before being recorded for *Tails*.
  • The single reached No. 18 on the *Billboard* Hot 100 and No. 8 on Canada's RPM singles chart.
  • Lisa Loeb said the video's original concept was more abstract than the finished version. She and her sister developed the concept with Sophie Muller, while Loeb worked with a designer to create the clothing she wore.
  • Loeb was closely involved in the editing. She felt the first cut was not edited in time with the music, so she and producer Juan Patino went back and re-edited it.
  • The video gives only fleeting prominence to an acoustic guitar and does not feature Nine Stories as a performing band. Loeb later pushed for the band and her electric guitar to receive more attention in the "Taffy" video.
  • The song's emotional premise came from the contradictory feelings surrounding a breakup: knowing a relationship should end while still wondering whether the other person remains just as preoccupied.
