Synopsis
Bjoerk moves through a dreamlike apartment that seems to shift with her emotional state. She appears in a modern bedroom, an Asian-inspired room, a bathroom, and a space filled with stereo equipment, while ultraviolet lighting turns the imagery into glowing day-glo colors. Intercut with these intimate scenes are surreal images of her dressed in white and floating against a blue sky. The video mirrors the song's conflicted breakup mood, moving between sensuality, isolation, anger, and fragile hope.
Factoids & Trivia
- The song and video are closely tied to the end of Bjork's relationship with Stephane Sednaoui. Bjork later described making the video as a personal and healing process.
- Although the video appears to move between several locations, nearly all of the scenes were filmed in the same space. Changes in set dressing and mise-en-scene transformed it into different rooms.
- Many of the objects seen in the video came from Bjork's own belongings, giving the apartment setting a deliberately personal quality.
- The ultraviolet sequences make Bjork, her clothing, and the surrounding objects glow in intense day-glo colors. This contrast with the softer bedroom and sky imagery heightens the song's tension between intimacy and emotional distance.
- A Japanese traditional doll is used as Bjork's only visible companion in the apartment scenes. It functions as a silent witness to the singer's changing moods.
- "Possibly Maybe" was released as a single in 1996, in three separate UK parts. The video later appeared on the Bjork video compilations "Volumen" in 1998 and "Volumen Plus" in 2002.
