Synopsis
The Style Council turn a rural outing into a colorful, carefree celebration. Paul Weller, Mick Talbot and Tracie Young travel on an open-top double-decker bus, joined by friends as they dance, relax and perform against a muted countryside backdrop. The deliberately informal footage captures the group's easygoing, fashion-conscious image, while hand-drawn pink, yellow and blue squiggles flash across the film. A hand-painted sign on the bus adds a playful question about whether anyone is "really free."
Factoids & Trivia
- "Speak Like a Child" was released on March 11, 1983, as The Style Council's debut single. It reached No. 4 on the UK Singles Chart.
- The song was also included on the 1983 mini-LP "Introducing The Style Council," which was initially issued in selected territories rather than the UK.
- Tracie Young appears in the video after contributing backing vocals to the recording. She was also one of the earliest artists signed to Paul Weller's Respond Records label.
- The bus carries a handmade sign reading "We're really free aren't we?!?!" The deliberately homemade detail fits the group's rejection of conventional rock-star presentation.
- Bright colored line drawings were added over parts of the footage in post-production, contrasting with the grainy, washed-out look of the countryside.
- The single paired "Speak Like a Child" with "Party Chambers," while the recording featured Zeke Manyika on drums.
