Synopsis

Set in the fashion world just before New York Fashion Week, Perfume follows photographers, designers, models, agents, editors, and publicists whose professional ambitions and personal conflicts collide. A photographer struggles to reinvent his career, a young designer weighs a major opportunity, and an aging fashion patriarch hides a devastating diagnosis while trying to protect his family's legacy.

Factoids & Trivia

  • All of the film's dialogue was improvised by the performers, giving its overlapping conversations an intentionally spontaneous, sometimes documentary-like quality.
  • The film premiered at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival and was later released as an independent American drama.
  • Its ensemble structure places the fashion business itself at the center, presenting magazine publishing, photography, design, and talent scouting as interconnected worlds rather than focusing on a single protagonist.
  • Perfume received a Producers Award nomination at the Independent Spirit Awards.
  • The film was frequently compared with Robert Altman's Ready to Wear, another ensemble drama about the fashion industry. Critics generally found Perfume more serious in tone but less insightful and less developed in its characters.
