Synopsis
Set against a sun-drenched but dangerous coastal backdrop, the video follows several intersecting stories of excess and violence. A lavish boat party attended by Ayah Marar is seized by armed pirates, while other characters pursue pleasure at a mansion, on a plane, and at a rave. A teenage boy, badly beaten earlier in the story, eventually confronts his attacker and takes brutal revenge. The glossy party imagery gradually gives way to a darker portrait of wealth, lust, betrayal, and sudden danger.
Factoids & Trivia
- The official video was released online on July 15, 2013, several weeks before the single's official UK release on August 2.
- Although the video is meant to evoke the Somali coast of East Africa, much of it was filmed around Santa Catalina Island and Avalon, California.
- The production used Avalon and the surrounding Pacific coastline as stand-ins for an international pirate setting. The teenage boy's fight scene was also filmed in Avalon.
- Hurts singer Theo Hutchcraft appears in the video as the host of the boat party.
- Before the finished clip appeared, Calvin Harris teased the shoot as having a "Great Gatsby" atmosphere. The final video retained the lavish parties, formal styling, and sense of decadent excess, but added considerably more sex and violence than that early description suggested.
- The video's nudity, sexual content, firearms, and violent scenes caused controversy in France, where it received restrictions on daytime television and, in some broadcasts, an age warning.
