Synopsis

The 2003 music video presents "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" as a stark anti-war montage rather than a conventional Christmas performance. Factoids & Trivia

• The video was created for the remastered 5.1 version of the song featured on the 2003 DVD *Lennon Legend: The Very Best of John Lennon*.

• An earlier video, released with *The John Lennon Video Collection* in 1992, takes a different approach. It combines images from Lennon and Yoko Ono's 1969 "War Is Over!" billboard campaign with family photographs of Lennon, Ono and their son Sean, plus footage of boys performing along with the original Harlem Community Choir recording.

• The song itself was released on December 1, 1971, credited to John & Yoko/The Plastic Ono Band with the Harlem Community Choir. Its B-side was Yoko Ono's "Listen, the Snow Is Falling."

• The anti-war slogan used in the video originated with Lennon and Ono's 1969 international billboard campaign: "War Is Over! If You Want It - Happy Christmas from John & Yoko."

• The recording was made with a children's choir from Harlem. The choir included around 30 children, and their participation helped give the protest song its communal, seasonal character.

• Lennon and Ono wrote the song in New York in 1971 as an attempt to create a Christmas standard that could carry a message of peace rather than simple seasonal nostalgia.

• The single was released too late to receive much initial promotion and was only modestly successful in the United States. It became much more prominent after Lennon's death in 1980 and eventually developed into a recurring Christmas standard.
