Synopsis

A record shopper flips through a series of strange albums, each revealing Morningwood performing in a different musical style. The band cycles through disco, glam rock, country, punk, rap, electronic pop and aerobics, with costumes, sets and cover designs parodying familiar pieces of 20th-century music culture. After sampling the collection, the shopper selects the self-titled Morningwood album, which begins playing on a record player as the video ends.

• The video is built around approximately 16 fictional album covers and performance setups, making its central joke a rapid tour through popular music history.

• Several segments directly echo recognizable reference points, including the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, the Ramones' debut album, Kraftwerk's The Man-Machine, Devo's Freedom of Choice and Olivia Newton-John's "Physical."

• "Smell the Wood" is a glam-rock parody whose title recalls Spinal Tap's fictional album Smell the Glove from This Is Spinal Tap.

• The fake records use translated or altered versions of the band's name. "Le Bois de Matin" is a literal French rendering of Morningwood, while "Morgenholz" performs the same joke in German.

• "Nth Degree" was released on Morningwood's self-titled debut album and reached No. 30 on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart.

• The song later appeared in a Mercury vehicle advertising campaign and was included in the video game Thrillville: Off the Rails.
