Walt & Vervain - Babe's Lair

Synopsis

A lone man drifts through a shadowy, dreamlike underworld where the boundaries between landscape, creature and apparition keep shifting. His passage through the "cave of tired souls" unfolds as a strange, hypnotic journey filled with looming silhouettes, strange encounters and a sense of quiet disorientation. Rather than following a conventional narrative, the video turns the song into an atmospheric fable about stagnation, isolation and the possibility of escape, with each carefully composed image deepening its eerie, otherworldly mood.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video's own description frames it as being about a man wasting his time in "the tired souls' cave," giving the surreal imagery a clear thematic foundation centered on inertia and emotional exhaustion.
  • The visual concept openly acknowledges three major influences: German Expressionism, the silhouette films of Lotte Reiniger, and the video game *Limbo*.
  • Its stark figure-against-background compositions and nearly monochromatic atmosphere give the piece the appearance of an animated shadow play, while the shifting environments add a more contemporary 3D and visual-effects feel.
  • The video circulated online in April 2013 and was subsequently featured by several animation, design and visual-effects outlets, where its dreamlike mood and silhouette-based style drew particular attention.
  • Coverage of the video consistently presents it as an atmospheric visual counterpart to the music rather than a literal, lyric-by-lyric narrative. Its ambiguity is therefore part of the design: the journey is meant to be experienced as a mood and a metaphor.
  • The video's Vimeo presentation credits the image to Patrice Joseph Blanc and links the project to Walt & Vervain's music pages.
