Hollerado - Pick Me Up

Wiki

Synopsis

Hollerado turn a hot-air-balloon festival into a surreal airborne adventure. The band joins balloonists for a chaotic race, while giant balloons battle overhead and the musicians perform inside an enormous balloon. On the ground, pink-haired jump-ropers, a cocker spaniel, and an unusually knowledgeable red-haired child add to the spectacle. The video shifts between live-action festival footage and handmade stop-motion animation, creating a deliberately nonsensical world that feels part travel diary, part puppet show, and part psychedelic sports broadcast.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video grew out of the band's decision to use each new music video as an opportunity to try an unusual real-world experience. For this one, they attended a hot-air-balloon festival in the desert and asked balloonists to take them flying.
  • Singer Menno Versteeg described the ballooning community as a tight-knit subculture with early-morning launches, pancake breakfasts, balloon memorabilia, and post-flight celebrations.
  • Several people encountered at the festival were brought into the video, including a pink-haired group of jump-ropers, a cocker spaniel named Franz, and a red-haired boy named Braeden who reportedly knew the names and dates of hurricanes from the previous 50 years.
  • After filming, the band felt that the footage did not form a coherent story. Animator friends responded by building puppets and adding stop-motion sequences, intentionally making the finished video even more absurd.
  • The live-action footage and animation were combined for "Pick Me Up," giving the clip its distinctive mixture of documentary spontaneity, handmade craft, and surreal comedy.
  • "Pick Me Up" was released in December 2012 and served as an early introduction to *White Paint*, Hollerado's second studio album, which arrived in February 2013.
  • The video followed Hollerado's established preference for playful, concept-driven clips, including the earlier "Good Day at the Races," which involved the band racing ostriches.
