Nero - Reaching Out

Synopsis

Nero's "Reaching Out" plays like the opening sequence to a lost 1980s television series set in Miami. A young couple moves through a glamorous world of yachts, fast cars, casinos, beaches, helicopters, bikinis and nightlife, with the imagery suggesting ambition, danger and decadent success. Nero appear within the collage, while Daryl Hall makes a brief appearance. Rapid editing, oversized titles and deliberately flashy transitions turn the video into a playful neon-noir fantasy rather than a conventional narrative.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was uploaded on November 25, 2011, ahead of the single's December 16 release.
  • Its central visual idea was to recreate the opening credits of an extravagant 1980s television show. "Miami Vice" is the most obvious reference, while "Kojak" was also cited as an influence.
  • Most of the footage came from Corbis Motion's archive of original 1980s stock material. Only two clips were newly filmed by Nexus Productions.
  • The production deliberately embraces awkward period-style typography, oversized lettering and clumsy transitions instead of trying to make the archival material look modern.
  • The footage was assembled into a loose story about a young couple trying to hustle their way to the top, giving the otherwise unrelated stock shots a television-style narrative.
  • The edit includes an intentionally excessive parade of period glamour: yachts, Porsches, race cars, helicopters, crystal chandeliers, white tigers, diamonds and pink flamingos.
  • Nero's Alana Watson appears alongside bandmates Daniel Stephens and Joe Ray, and Daryl Hall also makes a cameo.
  • Hall's vocal contribution to the song was newly recorded for Nero rather than taken directly from the original "Out of Touch" recording. The video consequently combines archival 1980s imagery with a new performance from the singer whose earlier work inspired the track.
