Synopsis

In a near-future Los Angeles, Theodore Twombly earns a living writing personal letters for strangers while recovering from the end of his marriage. His life changes when he installs an advanced operating system with a warm, engaging voice. As their relationship deepens into romance, Theodore must confront questions about intimacy, consciousness, and whether love can exist between a human being and an artificial intelligence.

Factoids & Trivia

• Samantha Morton originally provided the operating system's voice during filming. After editing began, Spike Jonze decided the character needed a different quality, and Scarlett Johansson re-recorded all of Samantha's dialogue.

• The film's futuristic city combines Los Angeles with Shanghai. The production digitally blended the Los Angeles skyline with Shanghai's Pudong district, while several exterior sequences were filmed in Shanghai.

• Production designer K.K. Barrett created a future that avoids the usual science-fiction imagery of robots, flying cars, and holograms. The film instead uses warm colors, streamlined architecture, and understated technology to support its emotional tone.

• Her received five Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Production Design, Original Score, and Original Song. It won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.

• The score was created by Arcade Fire with Owen Pallett. "The Moon Song," written by Karen O and Jonze, was also nominated for an Academy Award.
