Synopsis

In 2024, Earth survives beneath an electromagnetic shield after industrial pollution destroys the ozone layer. Now mortal and aged, Connor MacLeod is drawn into a rebellion against the corporation controlling the shield. When assassins restore his immortality, Connor reunites with Ramirez and confronts General Katana, an enemy from his forgotten past, in a battle that could restore the planet's atmosphere.

Factoids & Trivia

• The sequel was developed under the working titles Highlander II: Yellowknife and Highlander 2020. It was financed largely through foreign presales after Hollywood studios showed little interest.

• Much of the picture was filmed in Argentina. Severe inflation disrupted the production, increasing the budget and eventually allowing the investors and completion bond company to take control of the film.

• Several action sequences used elaborate practical setups. The train wreck was filmed inside an upside-down subway car, with performers suspended on wires while air blowers simulated the force of a moving train.

• The theatrical version radically revised the mythology established by Highlander, presenting the Immortals as exiles from the planet Zeist. The 1995 Renegade Version removed the explicit alien explanation and substantially rearranged the film.

• Different cuts circulated internationally. The British theatrical version ran about eight minutes longer than the U.S. release and included additional material, including an alternate ending often called the "Fairy Tale Ending."

• The film's continuity problems became part of its legacy. Highlander III: The Sorcerer disregarded the events of this sequel, while later home-video editions promoted revised versions intended to make the story more coherent.
